Unless you’re from Canada, the name “Nanaimo” probably doesn’t ring much meaning to you.
But, if we disclose that the word brings smooth chocolate and coconut into the mix, do we perhaps have your attention now?
What is a Nanaimo Bar?
Named after Nanaimo, British Columbia on Vancouver Island, the nanaimo bar is a dessert of Canadian origin. This sweet delectable requires no baking and traditionally consists of three layers: a wafer and coconut crumb-base, yellow custard flavored butter icing and layer of chocolate ganache on top.
We have some Canadians apart of our team here at VJC who decided to create a healthier version of these scrumptious desserts. Our speciality includes making desserts a better choice with real, minimal ingredients so hang on tight for this #ManiFreshToMonday:
A Healthier Twist To This Classic Dessert
We substitute all three layers of the Nanaimo bar with superfoods such as cashews, almonds and of course - coconut. This blend still has the crumble and melting effect from bite one, but provides cleaner energy from such a sweet dessert. The extra twist we took on this classic was adding turmeric, the anti-inflammatory powerhouse, to ensure that with every bite, your body is getting the support it needs, inside and out.
Don’t worry, you still get that spoon lickin’ experience…just in healthier doses 😉
