It’s hard for us to choose just one out of the abundance of the many fresh, sweet components of nature we call fruit. With the crinkling of leaves in the fall, crunchy apples are a staple. When summer rolls around, it seems like any source of refreshment is what our taste buds crave. (hello watermelon?!). Fruits are sweet to the tongue, but also full of antioxidants to help keep our immune system at peak performance. Today, we want to talk about one of our favorite fruits (maybe one you don’t hear about as much): dragonfruit.
The Mythical Pitaya
Dragonfruit (otherwise known as pitaya) is recognized for its dramatic physical characteristics; it’s varieties include pink or magenta-colored flesh or white flesh with a yellow peel. The origin of this fruit isn’t known but thought to be from Central America. It is a part of the climbing cacti (Cactaceae) family and broadly cultivated in Vietnam, which is the world’s leading exporter of dragon fruit. However, research shows that it was in fact the French who introduced the fruit into Vietnam over a hundred years ago - who would have thought!
This tropical fruit is a great source of Vitamin C and calcium, and according to studies increases air in the digestive system. Even more exciting, dragon fruit is an excellent prebiotic food. Prebiotic foods are non-digestible complex carbohydrates that promote growth of our microbes (such as Bifidobacteria and Lactobacillae) as a feeding ground in our digestive tract to help keep a happy gut. Luckily, most foods offer this prebiotic effect, so no need for a supplement.
Research has shown that dragonfruit potentially enhances glycemic effects, because it encourages the growth of pancreatic cells that produce insulin. In simpler terms: dragon fruit may be a great choice to help regulate blood glucose levels. This zesty and tropical fruit is full of great nutrients and a perfect selection for a summer refreshment.
