Sink your teeth into this summer staple

THE BRIGHTNESS OF SUMMER EMERGING MEANS NEW FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES IN HARVEST.

Here at VJC, we take pride in our vast variety of the freshest, flavorful produce. To celebrate the summer season, we want to talk about one of our favorite fruits - in season and dangling from their vines.

Nothing beats 7:30PM sunsets on the back porch with a fresh, juicy tomato sandwich in hand and while summer is here, it is our duty to take advantage of every second of it! Join us in this celebration of the senses by getting out of the office, and walking downtown where our Basil, Bacon & Tomato Toast is waiting for you to savor.

Maybe you’re like me and grew up eating fresh tomatoes out of the garden, slathered with salty mayonnaise, crispy bacon, and romaine lettuce on moist white bread. While there is nothing wrong with the traditional BLT, there is no denying that new nutritional information shows us there are more functional and nourishing options to create a denser, energizing meal. At VJC, we added a different twist to this summer staple to ensure the most invigorating, healthy options are available for you.

While I’d agree that bacon can be the better juicy gossip, I want to talk about the red fruit (yes, a fruit!) this #ManiFreshToMonday:

HOW IS A TOMATO A FRUIT?

The difference between fruits and vegetables stems from their botanical structure and function. While vegetables are the roots, leaves or other auxiliary parts of a plant, fruits grow from the flower of the plant, contain seeds and aid in the plants reproductive process. Despite the tangy flavor, tomatoes are considered a fruit because they grow from small yellow flowers off a vine (and have an abundance of seeds). It definitely feels odd to ask for a salty fruit, but we cannot deny the science y’all!

NOW, SINK YOUR TEETH INTO THIS:

VJC’s mouth watering Basil, Bacon, & Tomato toast begins with Camino Bakery’s thick, moist bread. Layered with a housemade avocado spread, crispy bacon and tender tomatoes, this simple treat is simply the definition of savory goodness. To top it off, VJC sprinkles fresh basil onto the toast for an exquisite touch. If you are looking for extra protein, a suggestion is a fried egg. Or, if you are looking for an even denser punch, I suggest adding some crumbled goat cheese for that little special extra. For my gluten sensitive readers, VJC offers GF simple kneads bread as a substitute as well as sweet potatoes as an option for some special combinations

Turn any day into a summer escape, and come celebrate mother’s nature gift to us all with these fresh produce and try VJC’s Basil, Bacon & Tomato toast. There is no time to waste!
